Coach Carlos earned his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Sergio Penha, one of the very few in the world to hold the BJJ Black and Red belt. Coach also trained Anthony Argyros and recently awarded him his BJJ black belt.

On June 22, 2010, Carlos Catania promoted longtime student of ten years, Anthony Argyros, to the rank of BJJ Black Belt at Cannonball Gym of Pompton Lakes, NJ.  Anthony is the first student to receive each BJJ belt promotion from Carlos, beginning in November 2001 (Blue Belt) and subsequently in March 2006 (Purple Belt), November 2009 (Brown Belt), and June 2010 (Black Belt).

Anthony was awarded “NAGA Grappler of the Decade 2000-2009” in March 2010 and will receive Gladiator Magazine’s “2010 Golden Gladiator” Award on August 7th at the Wildwood Convention Center at the annual NAGA “Battle at the Beach” tournament. Sergio Penha –  (March 2010)

In 1977, when only 17 years old, Sergio Penha was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his freind, Wagner Cardoso, a black belt in the sport, who invited him to see Professor OsWaldo Alves’ academy. Now, 30+ years later, during and after following a career as an airline pilot, Sergio never lost the affinity for the art, and continues to practice and teach Jiu-Jitsu. Currently living in Las Vegas, Sergio started his own business by opening the academy which carries his name, “Sérgio Penha & The Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”.
